Garbage is one of the biggest problems in Indonesia. In 2019 the amount of waste in Indonesia reached 67 million tonnes with 24% of the waste being disposed of in the landfill and 7% of the waste. Even worse, when a pandemic hits, the amount of waste will increase, especially plastic waste and medical waste.
On the other hand, the increasing amount of waste generated is not proportional to proper waste processing by the community. What’s more, the Covid-19 pandemic makes cleanliness an absolute must for the environment. Therefore it is necessary to have activities to provide education and real movement in waste management in the community.
The 2020-2 Internal Collaboration Community Service Activity (PkM) raised the title “Development of My Designed Village Digital Waste Bank to Maintain the Environment in a New Normal”. This PkM is carried out by a team of lecturers from the Faculty of Communication and Business (S1 Business Administration study program and S1 Communication Science) in collaboration with a team of lecturers from the Faculty of Applied Sciences (D3 Information Systems and D3 Computer Technology study programs).
Also, this activity collaborates with student startup GoniGoni, which provides a waste management ecosystem from upstream to downstream. PkM is part of a series of routine activities of the StartUpHub.id community and KoRAL (Inter-Lab Research Community) in the two Faculties to build a BERSERI Village (Clean, Healthy, Neat Beautiful).
At the PkM Desa Berseri, assistance was provided in the form of garbage bank equipment, masks, and gloves, printers for the waste bank savings process, uniforms of garbage bank officers and administrators, access to digital waste bank applications, waste sorting books, and the BERSERI Village garbage bank portal website to the village community My plan through the Al Istiqomah Series Mosque Garbage Bank. A series of events were carried out during this activity starting from waste management and sorting education, Abdimas (Community Service) Webinar on Digital Waste Bank on December 16, 2020.
And the series of events closed with the inauguration of the Garbage Bank on December 19, 2020, which was attended by village leaders, community members, and Village Waste Bank administrators. As a continuation, the Garbage Bank (Desa BERSERI) in Rancatungku, represented by the Al Istiqomah Mosque Garbage Bank, will collaborate with the Student Startup – GoniGoni for sustainable activities both in waste management and utilization of waste for handicraft items.
